The U.S. Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) has been a leader in weed science research covering topics ranging from the development and use of integrated weed management (IWM) tactics to basic mechanistic studies, including biotic resistance of desirable plant communities and herbicide resistance. ARS weed scientists have worked in agricultural and natural ecosystems, including agronomic and horticultural crops, pastures, forests, wild lands, aquatic habitats, wetlands, and riparian areas. Through strong partnerships with academia, state agencies, private industry, and numerous federal programs, ARS weed scientists have made contributions to discoveries in the newest fields of robotics and genetics, as well as the traditional and fundamental subjects of weed–crop competition and physiology and integration of weed control tactics and practices. Weed science at ARS is often overshadowed by other research topics; thus, few are aware of the long history of ARS weed science and its important contributions. This review is the result of a symposium held at the Weed Science Society of America’s 62nd Annual Meeting in 2022 that included 10 separate presentations in a virtual Weed Science Webinar Series. The overarching themes of management tactics (IWM, biological control, and automation), basic mechanisms (competition, invasive plant genetics, and herbicide resistance), and ecosystem impacts (invasive plant spread, climate change, conservation, and restoration) represent core ARS weed science research that is dynamic and efficacious and has been a significant component of the agency’s national and international efforts. This review highlights current studies and future directions that exemplify the science and collaborative relationships both within and outside ARS. Given the constraints of weeds and invasive plants on all aspects of food, feed, and fiber systems, there is an acknowledged need to face new challenges, including agriculture and natural resources sustainability, economic resilience and reliability, and societal health and well-being.

Introduction
According to the Consensus Guideline, the “therapeutic reference range” (TRR) defines ranges of drug blood concentrations that specify a lower limit below which a drug-induced therapeutic response is unlikely to occur and an upper limit above which tolerability decreases or the therapeutic improvement ceases. The TRR can be obtained from concentration measurements (trough (pre-dose) plasma concentration under steady-state conditions) in studies at therapeutically effective doses.
ObjectivesThe aim is to examine the TRR for cariprazine (CAR: 1.5 mg/day to 6 mg/day) in schizophrenia studies.
MethodsThe population based TRR for CAR is derived by PK/PD evaluation from phase 2/3 schizophrenia efficacy studies with sparse PK sampling. The population PK simulated TRR is compared to the actually measured values obtained from two PK studies. As the two active metabolites of cariprazine also contribute to the drug effect, plasma exposure is given for Total cariprazine (CAR + DCAR + DDCAR) and the parent drug (CAR).
ResultsPK/PD analyses demonstrated an increase in efficacy with increasing exposure. These efficacy results are related to Total cariprazine trough concentrations of ca. 30 nM and 100 nM that determine the lower and upper TRR limits. For the parent drug, the pre-dose mean plasma concentration at 6 mg/day was between 5.7-10 ng/mL in different studies, while at 1.5 mg/day it was 1.9 ng/mL.
ConclusionsThe TRR of the trough plasma levels at steady state is ca. 30 – 100 nM for Total cariprazine and ca. 2-10 ng/mL for the parent drug (unchanged drug) for schizophrenia treatment.

The isotope dependence of plasma transport will have a significant impact on the performance of future D-T experiments in JET and ITER and eventually on the fusion gain and economics of future reactors. In preparation for future D-T operation on JET, dedicated experiments and comprehensive transport analyses were performed in H, D and H-D mixed plasmas. The analysis of the data has demonstrated an unexpectedly strong and favourable dependence of the global confinement of energy, momentum and particles in ELMy H-mode plasmas on the atomic mass of the main ion species, the energy confinement time scaling as ${\tau _E}\sim {A^{0.5}}$ (Maggi et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion, vol. 60, 2018, 014045; JET Team, Nucl. Fusion, vol. 39, 1999, pp. 1227–1244), i.e. opposite to the expectations based only on local gyro-Bohm (GB) scaling, ${\tau _E}\sim {A^{ - 0.5}}$, and stronger than in the commonly used H-mode scaling for the energy confinement (Saibene et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 39, 1999, 1133; ITER Physics Basis, Nucl. Fusion, vol. 39, 1999, 2175). The scaling of momentum transport and particle confinement with isotope mass is very similar to that of energy transport. Nonlinear local GENE gyrokinetic analysis shows that the observed anti-GB heat flux is accounted for if collisions, E × B shear and plasma dilution with low-Z impurities (9Be) are included in the analysis (E and B are, respectively the electric and magnetic fields). For L-mode plasmas a weaker positive isotope scaling ${\tau _E}\sim {A^{0.14}}$ has been found in JET (Maggi et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion, vol. 60, 2018, 014045), similar to ITER97-L scaling (Kaye et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 37, 1997, 1303). Flux-driven quasi-linear gyrofluid calculations using JETTO-TGLF in L-mode show that local GB scaling is not followed when stiff transport (as is generally the case for ion temperature gradient modes) is combined with an imposed boundary condition taken from the experiment, in this case predicting no isotope dependence. A dimensionless identity plasma pair in hydrogen and deuterium L-mode plasmas has demonstrated scale invariance, confirming that core transport physics is governed, as expected, by the 4 dimensionless parameters ρ*, ν*, β, q (normalised ion Larmor radius, collisionality, plasma pressure and safety factor) consistently with global quasi-linear gyrokinetic TGLF calculations (Maggi et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 59, 2019, 076028). We compare findings in JET with those in different devices and discuss the possible reasons for the different isotope scalings reported from different devices. The diversity of observations suggests that the differences may result not only from differences affecting the core, e.g. heating schemes, but are to a large part due to differences in device-specific edge and wall conditions, pointing to the importance of better understanding and controlling pedestal and edge processes.

Background.
Compulsory admission procedures of patients with mental disorders vary between countries in Europe. The Ethics Committee of the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) launched a survey on involuntary admission procedures of patients with mental disorders in 40 countries to gather information from all National Psychiatric Associations that are members of the EPA to develop recommendations for improving involuntary admission processes and promote voluntary care.
Methods.The survey focused on legislation of involuntary admissions and key actors involved in the admission procedure as well as most common reasons for involuntary admissions.
Results.We analyzed the survey categorical data in themes, which highlight that both medical and legal actors are involved in involuntary admission procedures.
Conclusions.We conclude that legal reasons for compulsory admission should be reworded in order to remove stigmatization of the patient, that raising awareness about involuntary admission procedures and patient rights with both patients and family advocacy groups is paramount, that communication about procedures should be widely available in lay-language for the general population, and that training sessions and guidance should be available for legal and medical practitioners. Finally, people working in the field need to be constantly aware about the ethical challenges surrounding compulsory admissions.
Kaolinite hydroxyls in dimethylsulphoxide-intercalated kaolinites at 77 K – a Raman spectroscopic study

Kaolinite hydroxyls in dimethylsulphoxide-intercalated (DMSO-intercalated) kaolinites have been determined using Raman spectroscopy at 298 and 77 K. The inner surface hydroxyl frequencies at 3650, 3670, 3684 and 3693 cm-1 move to higher wavenumbers upon cooling to 77 K and are observed at 3659, 3676, 3692 and 3702 cm-1. The inner hydroxyl frequency is at 3620 cm-1 at 298 K and is at 3615 cm-1 at 77 K. Upon intercalation with DMSO, additional bands are found at 3660, 3536 and 3501 cm-1 for the low-defect kaolinite and at 3664, 3543 and 3509 cm-1 for the high-defect kaolinite at 298 K. The 3660 cm-1 band at 298 K is resolved into two bands at 3658 and 3663 cm-1 at 77 K for the low-defect kaolinite and these bands are assigned to the inner surface hydroxyl groups, hydrogen-bonded to the DMSO molecule. It is proposed that the DMSO molecule exists with two different orientations in the intercalate and these two molecular forms are differentiated by the OH-stretching bands of the inner surface hydroxyl groups. This band for the high-defect kaolinite is found at 3664 cm-1 at 298 K and resolves into two bands at 3664 and 3673 cm-1 at 77 K.
Illegal killing and taking of birds in Europe outside the Mediterranean: assessing the scope and scale of a complex issue

The illegal killing and taking of wild birds remains a major threat on a global scale. However, there are few quantitative data on the species affected and countries involved. We quantified the scale and scope of this issue in Northern and Central Europe and the Caucasus, using a diverse range of data sources and incorporating expert knowledge. The issue was reported to be widespread across the region and affects almost all countries/territories assessed. We estimated that 0.4–2.1 million birds per year may be killed/taken illegally in the region. The highest estimate of illegal killing in the region was for Azerbaijan (0.2-1.0 million birds per year). Out of the 20 worst locations identified, 13 were located in the Caucasus. Birds were reported to be illegally killed/taken primarily for sport and food in the Caucasus and for sport and predator/pest control in both Northern and Central Europe. All of the 28 countries assessed are parties to the Bern Convention and 19 are also European Union Member States. There are specific initiatives under both these policy instruments to tackle this threat, yet our data showed that illegal killing and taking is still occurring and is not restricted to Mediterranean European countries. Markedly increased effort is required to ensure that existing legislation is adequately implemented and complied with/enforced on the ground. Our study also highlighted the paucity of data on illegal killing and taking of birds in the region. It is a priority, identified by relevant initiatives under the Bern Convention and the European Union, to implement systematic monitoring of illegal killing and taking and to collate robust data, allowing stakeholders to set priorities, track trends and monitor the effectiveness of responses.

A horizontally polarizing liquid trap enhances the tabanid-capturing efficiency of the classic canopy trap

Host-seeking female tabanid flies, that need mammalian blood for the development of their eggs, can be captured by the classic canopy trap with an elevated shiny black sphere as a luring visual target. The design of more efficient tabanid traps is important for stock-breeders to control tabanids, since these blood-sucking insects can cause severe problems for livestock, especially for horse- and cattle-keepers: reduced meat/milk production in cattle farms, horses cannot be ridden, decreased quality of hides due to biting scars. We show here that male and female tabanids can be caught by a novel, weather-proof liquid-filled black tray laid on the ground, because the strongly and horizontally polarized light reflected from the black liquid surface attracts water-seeking polarotactic tabanids. We performed field experiments to reveal the ideal elevation of the liquid trap and to compare the tabanid-capturing efficiency of three different traps: (1) the classic canopy trap, (2) the new polarization liquid trap, and (3) the combination of the two traps. In field tests, we showed that the combined trap captures 2.4–8.2 times more tabanids than the canopy trap alone. The reason for the larger efficiency of the combined trap is that it captures simultaneously the host-seeking female and the water-seeking male and female tabanids. We suggest supplementing the traditional canopy trap with the new liquid trap in order to enhance the tabanid-capturing efficiency.
Ellipsometric characterization of thin nanocomposite films with tunable refractive index for biochemical sensors

Creating optical quality thin films with a high refractive index is increasingly important for waveguide sensor applications. In this study, we present optical models to measure the layer thickness, vertical and lateral homogeneity, the refractive index and the extinction coefficients of the polymer films with nanocrystal inclusions using spectroscopic ellipsometry. The optical properties can be determined in a broad wavelength range from 190 to 1700 nm. The sensitivity of spectroscopic ellipsometry allows a detailed characterization of the nanostructure of the layer, i.e. the surface roughness down to the nm scale, the interface properties, the optical density profile within the layer, and any other optical parameters that can be modeled in a proper and consistent way. In case of larger than about 50 nm particles even the particle size can be determined from the onset of depolarization due to light scattering. Besides the refractive index, the extinction coefficient, being a critical parameter for waveguiding layers, was also determined in a broad wavelength range. Using the above information from the ellipsometric models the preparation conditions can be identified. A range of samples were investigated including doctor bladed films using TiO2 nanoparticles.

A large outbreak of scombroid fish poisoning associated with eating escolar fish (Lepidocybium flavobrunneum)

In August 2003, an outbreak of scombroid fish poisoning occurred at a retreat centre in California, USA. In a retrospective cohort study, 42 (75%) of the 56 dinner attendees who ate escolar fish (Lepidocybium flavobrunneum) met the case definition. Individuals who ate at least 2 oz of fish were 1·5 times more likely to develop symptoms than those who ate less (relative risk 1·5, 95% confidence interval 0·9–2·6), and to develop more symptoms (median 7 vs. 3 symptoms, P=0·03). Patients who took medicine had a longer duration of symptoms than those who did not (median 4 vs. 1·5 h, P=0·05), and experienced a greater number of symptoms (median 8 vs. 3 symptoms, P=0·0002). Samples of fish contained markedly elevated histamine levels (from 2000 to 3800 ppm). This is one of the largest reported outbreaks of scombroid fish poisoning in the United States and was associated with a rare vehicle for scombroid fish poisoning, escolar.

Lateral conductivity effects have been investigated in self-organised InAs quantum dot (QD) structures grown in a GaAs matrix with different cap layers. Current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-voltage (C-V), DLTS, capacitance and conductance frequency dependence, fast defect transient (FDT), and electron beam induced conductivity (EBIC) measurements were applied. The conductivity in the QD plane decays within a distance of 10 microns. The capacitance transients are dominated by the local QD-plane transversal conductivity and by the free carrier transport in the cap layer. The nonequilibrium free carrier created by electron beam excitation develop a potential barrier at macroscopic distances from the electrical contacts.

The original method for molecular typing of E. coli strains was developed using the polymorphism in chromosomal sequences of bacterial interspersed mosaic elements (BIMEs) detected by multiplex PCR and analysed by AFLP assay. The applicability of the method in the epidemiology of E. coli was tested on a group of 524 strains of human and veterinary origin. In the studied group 18 different genotypes were detected. Significant differences were found in the frequencies of the genotypes among various groups of strains, suggesting the method could be a promising tool in the epidemiology of E. coli.
